What is it used for?
Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and duration, and complete the full course even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with food if advised or if it causes stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and headache. Skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, allergies or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling or breathing difficulty.
