What is it used for?
Colistimethate injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain bacteria, especially difficult-to-treat Gram-negative infections such as those caused by Pseudomonas or Acinetobacter. It is generally used when other suitable antibiotics may not work.

How does it work?
It is converted in the body to colistin, which damages the outer membrane of susceptible bacteria and kills them.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection or infusion by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or healthcare setting. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection, kidney function and response to treatment. Do not self-administer or skip doses.

Common side effects
Kidney problems, tingling or numbness, dizziness, weakness, muscle weakness, nausea and diarrhoea may occur. Serious allergic reactions and breathing or muscle problems can occur rarely.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, neuromuscular disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being used. Kidney function and, when needed, nerve and muscle function should be monitored during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, severe weakness, facial swelling or a widespread rash.
