What is it used for?
Chloramphenicol is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections, such as typhoid fever and some severe infections, when other suitable antibiotics are not appropriate. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Use only when prescribed by a doctor. Take or use it exactly as directed, and complete the prescribed course unless advised otherwise. Do not share it or use leftover medicine.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache may occur. Chloramphenicol can rarely cause serious blood disorders.

Precautions
This medicine should be used only under medical supervision because it can seriously affect blood cells. A doctor may recommend blood tests during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for unusual bruising or bleeding, marked paleness, persistent fever, sore throat or severe weakness. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver problems or any other medicines being taken.
