What is it used for?
Dabigatran is an anticoagulant used to prevent and treat blood clots. It may be prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke in certain people with an irregular heartbeat, and to treat or prevent clots in the legs or lungs.

How does it work?
It blocks thrombin, a substance needed for blood clot formation. This helps reduce the chance of harmful blood clots developing or growing.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not open, crush or chew the capsule. Do not stop treatment or double a missed dose without medical advice.

Common side effects
Easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding from minor cuts, heavier menstrual bleeding, indigestion, stomach discomfort or nausea. Any unusual or prolonged bleeding may be serious.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, a history of bleeding or stomach ulcers, or any planned surgery or dental procedure. Medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen and other blood thinners may increase bleeding risk. Seek urgent medical help for heavy or uncontrollable bleeding, vomiting blood, black stools, severe headache or weakness. Do not stop dabigatran without medical advice.
