What is it used for?
Dapagliflozin is mainly used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is also prescribed for some adults with heart failure or chronic kidney disease to reduce the risk of worsening disease and hospitalisation.

How does it work?
It helps the kidneys remove excess glucose and some sodium from the body through urine. This lowers blood sugar and may also reduce the workload on the heart and kidneys.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow it with water. It may usually be taken with or without food. Drink enough fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not stop it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, thirst, dehydration, dizziness, urinary tract infection, and genital fungal infection. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, low blood pressure, dehydration, or frequent urinary or genital infections. Seek urgent medical help for nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, breathing difficulty, or confusion, as these may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis even if blood sugar is not very high. It may need to be temporarily stopped during severe illness, prolonged fasting, or before surgery, only on medical advice. Discuss its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with a doctor.
