What is it used for?
Etophylline and theophylline are bronchodilators used to help prevent and control breathing problems such as wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They are generally not intended for immediate relief of a sudden breathing attack.

How does it work?
It relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping them open and making breathing easier.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take more than recommended, as theophylline can cause side effects at high levels. Take it consistently in relation to food, and do not change or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, shakiness and fast or irregular heartbeat.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, as theophylline has a narrow safety range and may require monitoring. Tell the doctor about heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, liver disease, stomach ulcers or thyroid problems. Avoid excessive caffeine, and inform the doctor about all medicines being taken because several medicines can interact with theophylline. Seek urgent medical help for persistent vomiting, severe palpitations, marked shakiness or seizures.
