What is it used for?
Etophylline and theophylline are bronchodilators used to help relieve breathing difficulties, wheezing and chest tightness in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They are not usually used as the only treatment for a sudden asthma attack.

How does it work?
It relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping to widen them and improve airflow to the lungs.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take more than the prescribed amount, as theophylline requires careful dosing. Do not stop regular treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, tremors and fast or irregular heartbeat may occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, liver disease, stomach ulcer or an overactive thyroid. Tell the doctor about all medicines being used, as many medicines can interact with theophylline. Seek urgent medical help for severe vomiting, persistent fast or irregular heartbeat, seizures or worsening breathing difficulty.
