What is it used for?
Divalproex sodium extended-release is mainly used to control seizures in epilepsy. It may also be prescribed for bipolar disorder or to prevent migraine attacks, as directed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It helps calm excessive electrical activity in the brain by increasing the effects of a natural calming chemical and affecting nerve-cell activity.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, sleepiness, dizziness, tremor, weight gain and hair thinning or hair loss.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. It can rarely cause serious liver damage, pancreatitis or low blood platelets; seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual bruising or yellowing of the skin or eyes. It can seriously harm an unborn baby, so pregnancy or plans for pregnancy must be discussed with a doctor. Tell the doctor about liver disease, bleeding problems and all other medicines being taken. Medical monitoring may be required.
