What is it used for?
Donepezil is used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, such as memory loss, confusion and difficulty with thinking. It may help manage symptoms but does not cure the disease.

How does it work?
It increases the level of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory and thinking, by slowing its breakdown in the brain.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor, preferably at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment or change the way it is taken without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, tiredness and muscle cramps.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, asthma or other breathing problems, stomach ulcers or bleeding, seizures, or difficulty passing urine. Seek medical help for fainting, very slow heartbeat, black stools, vomiting blood, or severe breathing difficulty. Tell the doctor or dentist before surgery, especially if anaesthesia is planned.
