What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as some urinary tract, gastrointestinal, respiratory, skin and other infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops bacteria from making the DNA they need to grow and survive, helping clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with plenty of water. Avoid taking it together with milk or yoghurt alone, antacids, iron, calcium or zinc supplements; follow the prescribed timing instructions. Do not take another dose to make up for a missed dose without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, kidney problems, heart rhythm problems, tendon disorders, seizures or nerve problems. Stop taking it and seek medical advice for tendon pain or swelling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nervous-system changes, or a serious allergic reaction. Use in children and teenagers only when specifically prescribed. Avoid excessive sun exposure and check for interactions with other medicines.
