What is it used for?
Metoclopramide is used to relieve nausea and vomiting. It may also be prescribed for slow stomach emptying and related digestive movement problems.

How does it work?
It blocks dopamine signals involved in nausea and vomiting. It also helps the stomach empty more quickly by increasing movement in the upper digestive tract.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and follow the instructions on the label. Do not take more than recommended or use it for longer than advised. Avoid driving or operating machinery if it causes drowsiness or restlessness.

Common side effects
Drowsiness, tiredness, restlessness, headache, diarrhoea and dizziness.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, depression, a history of involuntary muscle movements, stomach or intestinal blockage or bleeding, or kidney or liver problems. Avoid alcohol and check before using it with sedatives, antipsychotics or other medicines that affect movement. Seek urgent medical help for unusual muscle movements, severe restlessness, facial or neck spasms, confusion or seizures. Prolonged use can cause serious movement disorders and should be avoided unless specifically advised.
