What is it used for?
Metoclopramide is used to relieve nausea and vomiting. It may also be prescribed to help food move through the stomach and upper digestive tract in certain conditions.

How does it work?
It blocks dopamine signals in the brain that can trigger nausea and vomiting. It also increases movement of the upper digestive tract, helping the stomach empty more quickly.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed by the doctor. The dose and duration depend on the condition being treated. Do not take it for longer than recommended, and avoid driving or operating machinery if it causes drowsiness or restlessness.

Common side effects
Drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, restlessness, headache and diarrhoea. Unusual muscle spasms, stiffness, shaking or uncontrolled movements can occur and require prompt medical attention.

Precautions
Do not use without medical advice if there is stomach or intestinal blockage, bleeding or perforation, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, or a history of involuntary muscle movements caused by medicines. Avoid alcohol, as it may increase drowsiness. Seek urgent medical help for severe muscle stiffness, abnormal movements, confusion or fever. Prolonged or repeated use can cause serious movement disorders.
