What is it used for?
Empagliflozin is mainly used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of worsening heart failure or kidney disease in some adults.

How does it work?
It helps the kidneys remove excess glucose from the blood through the urine. This lowers blood sugar and can also reduce excess fluid in the body.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Drink enough fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not stop or change the medicine without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, thirst, dehydration, dizziness, urinary tract infection, and genital fungal infection. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or some other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, low blood pressure, dehydration, or recurrent urinary or genital infections. Seek urgent medical help for severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, or fast breathing, as these may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis even if blood sugar is not very high. The medicine may need to be stopped temporarily during serious illness, prolonged fasting, or before surgery, only as advised by a doctor. Discuss its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
