What is it used for?
Used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Empagliflozin helps the kidneys remove excess sugar through urine. Metformin reduces sugar production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with food. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, split or chew it. Maintain adequate fluid intake unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, increased urination, thirst, urinary tract infections and genital fungal infections. Low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, dehydration, recurrent urinary or genital infections, heart failure, or heavy alcohol use. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, vomiting, stomach pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or unusual drowsiness, as these may indicate lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis. The medicine may need to be stopped temporarily during prolonged fasting, severe illness, dehydration or around surgery, only on medical advice. Kidney function should be checked regularly.
