What is it used for?
Empagliflozin + metformin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Empagliflozin helps the kidneys remove extra glucose from the body through urine.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew or split it. Drink enough fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, increased urination, thirst, genital fungal infections and urinary tract infections may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about kidney or liver problems, dehydration, recurrent urinary or genital infections, heart failure, or a planned surgery or procedure. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, vomiting, stomach pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, or very little urine. This medicine may need to be stopped temporarily during serious illness, prolonged fasting or before some procedures. Avoid excessive alcohol and tell the doctor before receiving contrast dye. Seek medical advice if pregnant or breastfeeding.
