What is it used for?
Used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Empagliflozin helps the kidneys remove excess glucose through urine. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with food to reduce stomach upset. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop it without medical advice. Maintain adequate fluid intake unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, reduced appetite, increased urination, urinary tract infections and genital fungal infections. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Kidney function should be checked before and during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, vomiting, stomach pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or unusual drowsiness, as these may indicate a serious complication. Contact a doctor for signs of dehydration, urinary infection or genital infection. Tell the doctor before surgery, prolonged fasting, severe illness, or if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid excessive alcohol and follow the prescribed diabetes monitoring plan.
