What is it used for?
Eplerenone is used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of heart failure, including heart failure after a heart attack. It may help reduce strain on the heart and lower the risk of further heart-related problems.

How does it work?
It blocks the action of aldosterone, a hormone that makes the body retain salt and water. This helps reduce fluid and pressure on the heart and blood vessels, but can increase potassium levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood tests may be needed to check potassium levels and kidney function.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, low blood pressure, increased potassium levels and changes in kidney function.

Precautions
Do not use potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, high potassium levels, or if taking blood-pressure medicines, diuretics or medicines that interact with eplerenone. Seek medical advice for muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat or severe dizziness. Potassium and kidney function should be monitored during treatment.
