What is it used for?
Esomeprazole reduces excess stomach acid. It is used for acidity, heartburn and acid reflux, and may also be used to help treat or prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers when prescribed.

How does it work?
It blocks the stomach’s acid-producing proton pumps, reducing the amount of acid made in the stomach.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually before food. Swallow the gastro-resistant tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation and gas.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about other medicines being taken, especially blood thinners, some HIV medicines, methotrexate or medicines affected by stomach acid. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss or persistent symptoms. Long-term use should be monitored by a doctor.
