What is it used for?
Escitalopram is used to treat depression and anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It increases the availability of serotonin, a chemical messenger that helps regulate mood and anxiety.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment suddenly; the dose should usually be reduced gradually under medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, headache, dry mouth, sweating, trouble sleeping, sleepiness, dizziness and sexual problems may occur. These effects may improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially other antidepressants or medicines affecting serotonin. Seek medical help for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, severe agitation, confusion, fever, muscle stiffness or unusual bleeding. Tell the doctor if there is a history of bipolar disorder, seizures, liver problems or glaucoma. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and avoid stopping it suddenly.
