What is it used for?
Escitalopram is an antidepressant used mainly to treat depression and anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety, panic disorder and social anxiety. It may also be prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

How does it work?
It increases the availability of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain that helps regulate mood and anxiety. Its benefits may take several weeks to become noticeable.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not stop taking it suddenly; the dose should be reduced gradually only under medical supervision.

Common side effects
Nausea, headache, dry mouth, increased sweating, sleepiness or difficulty sleeping, dizziness and sexual problems may occur. These effects may improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about bipolar disorder, seizures, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or any history of suicidal thoughts. Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and inform the doctor about all other medicines, especially those affecting serotonin or increasing bleeding risk. Seek urgent medical help for severe agitation, confusion, fever, muscle stiffness, unusual bleeding, a severe allergic reaction or worsening suicidal thoughts. Do not stop suddenly, and avoid alcohol if it increases drowsiness.
