What is it used for?
Esomeprazole is used to reduce excess stomach acid. It helps treat acidity, heartburn and acid reflux, and may also be used for acid-related stomach ulcers as prescribed.

How does it work?
It is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the final step of acid production in the stomach, reducing irritation and allowing acid-related problems to heal.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably before food. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain and gas.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if long-term treatment is planned. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss or persistent symptoms. Esomeprazole can interact with some medicines, including certain blood thinners and medicines used to treat HIV; provide a complete list of medicines being taken.
