What is it used for?
Artesunate injection is used for the emergency treatment of severe malaria, including malaria caused by Plasmodium parasites. It is given in a hospital or healthcare setting and is usually followed by a complete course of an oral antimalarial medicine as prescribed.

How does it work?
Artesunate is converted in the body to an active substance that damages and kills malaria parasites in the blood, helping to reduce the parasite load quickly.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or trained healthcare professional. It must be prepared and administered according to the product instructions. Do not self-inject. Complete the follow-up antimalarial treatment prescribed by the doctor.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fever, injection-site discomfort and changes in liver blood tests may occur. Delayed breakdown of red blood cells can rarely occur after treatment.

Precautions
It should be used under medical supervision for severe malaria. Tell the doctor about any previous reaction to artesunate or other antimalarial medicines. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, fainting or worsening fever after treatment. Medical follow-up and blood tests may be needed after treatment to check for delayed anaemia or other complications.
