What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used to lower high uric acid levels in people with gout. It helps prevent the build-up of uric acid crystals that can cause gout attacks and joint problems.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, reducing the body's production of uric acid.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Gout attacks may occur more often when treatment is first started; continue the medicine unless the prescriber advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Gout flare-ups, nausea, joint pain, skin rash, and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver disease, kidney disease, or any previous allergy to this medicine. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash. Liver tests may be needed during treatment. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline.
