What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used for the long-term treatment of gout in adults with high uric acid levels. It lowers uric acid to help prevent gout attacks and the buildup of urate crystals. It does not provide immediate relief from pain during an acute gout attack.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, which reduces the production of uric acid in the body.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment without medical advice, even if symptoms improve. Continue any separate medicine prescribed for an acute gout attack as directed.

Common side effects
Nausea, joint pain, rash, diarrhoea, and abnormal liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver or kidney problems, or a previous reaction to febuxostat. Seek urgent medical help for a severe or blistering rash, swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or sudden weakness. Febuxostat can interact with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, and some other medicines. Liver tests and uric acid monitoring may be needed. Discuss its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with a doctor.
