What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used to lower high uric acid levels in adults with gout. It helps prevent future gout attacks and uric acid crystal buildup, but it does not provide immediate relief during an acute gout attack.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, which reduces the body’s production of uric acid.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it regularly even when symptoms are not present. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Other medicines may be prescribed at the start of treatment to help prevent gout flares.

Common side effects
Gout flare-ups, nausea, joint pain, rash, and abnormal liver function test results may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver disease, kidney disease, or any previous allergy to febuxostat. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe rash, facial swelling, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not use with azathioprine or mercaptopurine unless specifically directed by a specialist. Regular medical follow-up and blood tests may be needed.
