What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used to lower high uric acid levels in adults with gout. It helps prevent gout attacks and complications caused by uric acid crystals, but it does not provide immediate relief during an acute gout attack.

How does it work?
It blocks xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in producing uric acid. This lowers uric acid levels in the blood and helps prevent crystal build-up in the joints.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue taking it regularly even if feeling well. Do not stop it without medical advice. Gout attacks can occur when treatment is first started; follow the prescribed treatment for such attacks.

Common side effects
Nausea, joint pain or a gout flare, rash, and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver disease, or kidney problems. Febuxostat may increase cardiovascular risk in some people. It should not be taken with azathioprine or mercaptopurine unless specifically directed by a specialist. Seek urgent medical help for severe rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or sudden weakness.
