What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used to lower high uric acid levels in people with gout and to help prevent future gout attacks. It does not provide immediate relief from the pain of an acute gout attack.

How does it work?
It blocks xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in making uric acid. This lowers uric acid levels in the blood and helps prevent urate crystal build-up in the joints.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Continue taking it regularly even if symptoms improve, and do not stop it without medical advice. Gout attacks may occur more often when treatment is first started; follow the prescribed treatment for such attacks.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, joint pain or gout flares, skin rash, and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver or kidney problems, or any previous allergy to febuxostat. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe or blistering skin rash. Do not use with azathioprine or mercaptopurine unless specifically directed by a doctor. Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
