What is it used for?
Used to prevent or treat iron and folic acid deficiency, including iron-deficiency anaemia and anaemia related to low folate levels.

How does it work?
Iron helps the body make haemoglobin and red blood cells. Folic acid supports the formation of healthy red blood cells and other body cells.

How to take/use it
Use exactly as prescribed or as directed on the product label. Swallow with water. If it causes stomach upset, taking it with food may help. Avoid taking it at the same time as tea, coffee, milk, calcium supplements or antacids, as these may reduce iron absorption.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea and dark-coloured stools.

Precautions
Do not take more than recommended; iron overdose can be dangerous, especially in children. Tell the doctor if there is a history of iron overload, vitamin B12 deficiency or another cause of anaemia. Iron and folic acid can interact with some medicines, including antacids, calcium supplements, thyroid medicines and certain antibiotics; medical advice may be needed about timing. Keep out of reach of children.
