What is it used for?
Used to prevent or treat iron and folic acid deficiency, including iron-deficiency anaemia. It may be prescribed when the body needs extra iron and folate to make healthy red blood cells.

How does it work?
Iron helps the body make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Folic acid supports the formation of healthy red blood cells, while ascorbate (vitamin C) helps improve iron absorption.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed. Swallow with water and do not exceed the recommended amount. If it causes stomach upset, it may be taken with or after food. Tea, coffee, milk, calcium supplements and antacids may reduce iron absorption; ask a doctor or pharmacist how to space them.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea. Dark or black stools are common with iron supplements.

Precautions
Use only after the cause of anaemia or deficiency has been assessed, as not all anaemia is caused by iron deficiency. Tell the doctor about iron-overload disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, or other medicines and supplements being used. Keep out of reach of children, as an iron overdose can be dangerous. Seek medical help for severe allergic reactions, persistent vomiting or severe stomach pain.
