What is it used for?
Folic acid 5 mg is used to treat or prevent folate deficiency and certain types of anaemia. It may also be prescribed during pregnancy to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the developing baby, when a higher-strength dose is needed.

How does it work?
Folic acid is a form of vitamin B9. It helps the body make healthy red blood cells and supports normal cell growth and development.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. Do not take more or use it for longer than recommended unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Nausea, bloating, wind or reduced appetite may occur. Skin rash or other allergic reactions are uncommon.

Precautions
Tell a healthcare professional if there may be a vitamin B12 deficiency, as folic acid can improve anaemia while allowing nerve damage from B12 deficiency to continue. Tell them about all medicines being taken, especially medicines for epilepsy or cancer. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe rash.
