What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, airways, urinary tract and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Reconstitute the powder only as directed on the label or by the pharmacist, using the supplied water if provided. Shake the suspension well before each use and take only the prescribed amount and for the prescribed duration. Complete the course unless the prescriber advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-associated severe diarrhoea, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin rash or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotics can promote resistance.
