What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic injection used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from making the protective cell wall they need to survive.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and must be decided by the prescriber. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in blood test results.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to ceftriaxone, cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or gallbladder problems. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash. It should be used in newborn babies only under specialist medical supervision.
