What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints. It is not effective against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection. Complete the prescribed course unless advised otherwise by the healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver test results.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin-type antibiotics. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially if it contains blood. Tell the doctor about liver or kidney problems, gallbladder problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being used. This medicine should be administered only under medical supervision.
