What is it used for?
This medicine is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, urinary tract and skin, when prescribed by a healthcare professional. It does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
Cefixime kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect cefixime from enzymes produced by some resistant bacteria.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at evenly spaced times if directed, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with food if it causes stomach upset. Do not share this medicine or use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion and skin rash may occur. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefixime, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics. Inform the doctor if there is kidney disease, a history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can lead to resistance.
