What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from resisting amoxycillin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or similar antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney or liver problems and any previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment.
