What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest, skin, urinary tract and teeth, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from breaking down amoxycillin, making the combination effective against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed. Take doses with food to help reduce stomach upset, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Oral or vaginal fungal infections can also develop.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, other similar antibiotics or cephalosporins. Inform the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney disease, glandular fever, or a history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, blistering, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
