What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxycillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against them.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share it or use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion and skin rash may occur. Thrush can also develop.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin or similar antibiotics. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney problems, glandular fever, allergies, or other medicines being used. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, a severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can cause resistance.
