What is it used for?
Gliclazide is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How does it work?
It is a sulfonylurea medicine that helps the pancreas release more insulin. This lowers blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or just before food if directed. Take it at the same time each day and do not skip meals. If a dose is missed, do not take an extra dose; follow the prescriber's instructions.

Common side effects
Low blood sugar, which may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness or confusion; nausea, indigestion, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea or constipation; headache and weight gain.

Precautions
The risk of low blood sugar is higher if meals are skipped, alcohol is consumed, exercise is unusually intense, or other diabetes medicines are used. Carry a quick source of sugar and seek medical help for severe or repeated low-sugar symptoms. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines. Do not use for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis unless specifically directed by a specialist.
