What is it used for?
Used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when one medicine alone is not sufficient.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Glimepiride helps the pancreas release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with or just before a meal. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not skip meals, and monitor blood sugar as advised.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach upset, abdominal discomfort and reduced appetite may occur, especially when starting treatment. Low blood sugar can cause sweating, shaking, dizziness, hunger or weakness. Glimepiride may also cause weight gain.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, heavy alcohol use, heart failure, or any planned surgery, scan using iodinated contrast, or serious infection. The risk of low blood sugar is higher if meals are skipped, alcohol is consumed, or other diabetes medicines are used. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, or severe abdominal symptoms. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function is important.
