What is it used for?
This medicine is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Glimepiride increases insulin release, while pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with food. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Monitor blood sugar as advised and do not take an extra dose if one is missed.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, low blood sugar, weight gain, and swelling of the ankles or legs.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is kidney or liver disease, heart failure, or a history of bladder cancer. Low blood sugar is more likely if meals are skipped or with other diabetes medicines; recognise symptoms such as sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, or confusion. Tell the doctor before surgery or an X-ray involving contrast dye. Seek medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, or sudden worsening swelling.
