What is it used for?
This medicine is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when one or more diabetes medicines are not sufficient. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
How does it work?
Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Glimepiride helps the pancreas release insulin, while pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity in the body's tissues.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food, and swallow it with water. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood sugar monitoring is important.
Common side effects
Low blood sugar, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, bloating, weight gain, swelling of the legs or ankles, and headache may occur.
Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heart failure, swelling, bladder problems or blood in the urine, and if pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, unusual sleepiness, or severe low blood sugar. Avoid excessive alcohol, and inform the doctor before surgery or an X-ray scan using an iodine contrast dye.
