What is it used for?
Glimepiride is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
It helps the pancreas release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar. It works only when the body can still produce insulin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or just before a meal. Take it at the same time each day and do not skip meals. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber’s instructions and do not take an extra dose unless advised.

Common side effects
Low blood sugar, dizziness, headache, nausea and weight gain. Low blood sugar may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, fast heartbeat, confusion or weakness.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. The risk of low blood sugar is higher if meals are missed, alcohol is consumed, or during strenuous exercise. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all other medicines being taken. Seek urgent help for severe or repeated low blood sugar, loss of consciousness, or difficulty breathing.
