What is it used for?
This combination is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when one medicine alone is not enough.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin better. Glimepiride helps the pancreas release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or just after food, and swallow it with water. Do not skip meals while taking it. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber’s instructions and do not take an extra dose unless advised.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, gas, vomiting, headache and a metallic taste may occur. Low blood sugar can cause sweating, shakiness, dizziness, hunger, fast heartbeat or confusion. Glimepiride may also cause weight gain.

Precautions
Monitor blood sugar as advised. Take extra care if there is kidney or liver disease, heavy alcohol use, or a history of low blood sugar. Avoid skipping meals and limit alcohol. Tell the doctor before surgery, prolonged fasting, or tests involving injected contrast dye. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or unusual sleepiness. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
