What is it used for?
This combination is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Glimepiride helps the pancreas release more insulin, while pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity in the body.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Follow the recommended diet, exercise plan and blood-sugar monitoring.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache, low blood sugar, weight gain and swelling of the ankles or legs.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is kidney, liver or heart disease. Pioglitazone may worsen heart failure and cause fluid retention. Glimepiride can cause low blood sugar, especially if meals are skipped, alcohol is consumed or exercise is increased. Tell the doctor before surgery, serious illness or an imaging test using contrast dye. Seek medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or marked swelling. This medicine may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically prescribed.
