What is it used for?
Griseofulvin is an oral antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections caused by dermatophytes, such as ringworm of the skin, scalp, hair or nails. It does not treat most infections caused by yeasts.

How does it work?
It stops fungal cells from growing and multiplying. It also becomes concentrated in newly formed skin, hair and nail tissue, helping protect it from fungal infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Taking it with a fatty meal may improve absorption. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, dizziness and skin rash. Increased sensitivity to sunlight may occur.

Precautions
Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a doctor. Inform the doctor about liver disease, lupus, porphyria or a history of allergy to griseofulvin. It can interact with warfarin and may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives; additional contraception may be needed. Seek medical advice for severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual tiredness.
