What is it used for?
Hydrochlorothiazide is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to reduce excess fluid buildup (swelling) caused by certain medical conditions.

How does it work?
It helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water through urine. This reduces fluid in the body and helps lower blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. Because it can increase urination, avoid taking it close to bedtime unless advised otherwise. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, and dehydration. Changes in blood salts, such as low potassium or sodium, may also occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical advice if there is kidney or liver disease, dehydration, gout, diabetes, low blood pressure, or an allergy to sulfonamide medicines. Regular blood pressure and blood tests may be needed to check kidney function and blood salts. Seek medical help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, or severe dizziness. Protect the skin from excessive sunlight, as this medicine may increase sun sensitivity.
