What is it used for?
Imipenem with cilastatin is a prescription injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, and blood. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Imipenem kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Cilastatin helps prevent imipenem from being broken down in the kidneys, allowing it to work effectively.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and other factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, headache, injection-site pain or redness, and inflammation of the vein may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to imipenem, cilastatin, penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics; kidney disease; or a history of seizures. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, swelling or breathing difficulty, severe rash, confusion or seizures. This medicine can interact with valproate medicines.
