What is it used for?
Imipenem with cilastatin is a prescription injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, and blood. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Imipenem kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. Cilastatin helps prevent imipenem from being broken down in the kidneys, allowing it to work effectively.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a healthcare professional, usually by injection into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, headache, and pain or redness at the injection site may occur. Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, seizures, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies to imipenem, cilastatin, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics; kidney disease; seizures or other brain disorders; and any medicines being taken, especially valproate. Kidney function may need monitoring, and the medicine should be used only when prescribed.
