What is it used for?
Used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections affecting the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, or blood. It is usually used in hospitals when injectable antibiotic treatment is needed.

How does it work?
Imipenem kills bacteria by preventing them from making their protective cell wall. Cilastatin helps stop imipenem from being broken down in the kidneys, allowing it to work effectively.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection or intravenous infusion by a doctor or trained healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, redness or pain at the injection site, headache and dizziness.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to imipenem, cilastatin, penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Tell the doctor about a history of seizures or nervous-system problems. Seek medical help for seizures, severe rash, breathing difficulty, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment.
