What is it used for?
Hydrocortisone sodium succinate injection is used for short-term treatment of severe inflammation or allergic reactions and for replacing the hormone cortisol when the body does not produce enough, such as in adrenal insufficiency. It may be used in hospital or emergency care when a rapid effect is needed.
How does it work?
It is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and overactivity of the immune system. It also acts like the natural hormone cortisol in the body.
How to take/use it
This injection is given into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the condition and response to treatment. It should not be self-administered.
Common side effects
Injection-site discomfort, increased blood sugar or blood pressure, indigestion, mood or sleep changes, increased appetite and fluid retention may occur. The risk of side effects increases with higher doses or longer treatment.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, mental health problems or any infection. This medicine can reduce the body's ability to fight infections and may mask infection symptoms. Do not stop prolonged corticosteroid treatment suddenly unless advised by a doctor. Seek medical help for severe infection symptoms, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat.
